Varun Arjun University’s IKS Initiative: QR Coding 500 Medicinal Plants for Digital Documentation

IKS -Indian knowledge System A QR coding project was successfully conducted at Varun Arjun University as part of an academic initiative aligned with the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). Spearheaded by the Department of Pharmacy, the project involved QR coding 500 medicinal plants located on the university campus. It was carried out by D. Pharm 2nd Year students from Varun Arjun College of Pharmacy, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Mr. Mohd. Juned.

The aim was to digitally document plant species, promote awareness of traditional Indian medicinal knowledge, and make information easily accessible through smartphone scanning. This initiative blends modern technology with ancient wisdom, enhancing plant identification and educational outreach for students and visitors.


Notable and rare medicinal plants QR coded include Laal Chandan (Red Sandalwood), Elaichi (Cardamom), Kadam, Ashok, Giloy, Ajwain, and Rudraksh. Each QR code provides the plant’s botanical name, common/local name, medicinal properties, Ayurvedic uses, images, and habitat details.


Rooted in the IKS framework, the project supports the conservation and dissemination of traditional ecological and medicinal knowledge. Future plans include expanding the plant database, launching a mobile app, collaborating with Ayurveda experts, and organizing workshops for public engagement and education.
